Toy lorries for the farm: tipper, livestock lorry or low loader?

Scale first

A lorry has to match the rest of the toys. A Bruder lorry at 1:16 is twice the size of a model at 1:32, and on Bruder's low loader a Siku tractor is far too small. Besides 1:32, Siku also makes lorries at 1:87: the MAN lorry with Steyr tractor (1764) has 1:87 in its name. Welly also makes lorries at 1:32, such as the Scania R470 with semi-trailer.

If your child plays with Bruder tractors, choose a Bruder lorry. If they are building a smaller farm with Siku, choose Siku and check the scale of each model. Our scale guide helps you convert, and the guide Bruder or Siku compares the two brands.

Tipper lorries: sand, grain and soil

A tipper has a body you raise to unload. Bruder has, among others, the MAN TGS tipper and the MAN tipper 2765. The Volvo A60H dump truck is an articulated hauler with a big body, as you see in a sand pit. For children under three Bruder makes the Roadmax range, including a Roadmax tipper for indoors and outdoors.

Livestock lorries: animals to the field or the market

A livestock lorry has a closed body with a ramp for the animals to walk in and out. Bruder's Scania Super 560R livestock lorry (03548) comes with one cow, according to the product name. If you already have Schleich or Bruder animals, they can ride along; mind the size of the animals, as it differs per brand.

Low loaders: moving a machine

A low loader carries a tractor, a telehandler or another machine. Bruder's MAN TGA low loader comes in a set with a Manitou telehandler. The MAN TGS with roll-off container comes with a Schäffer loader.

Siku often sells low loaders and lorries in a set with tractors. Examples are the low loader with John Deere tractors (1837), the lorry with New Holland tractors (1805) and the Volvo lorry with JCB tractors (1785). One box gives you a lorry and something to carry. Do check the scale: for the Volvo lorry with JCB tractors Siku gives 1:87, much smaller than the Siku Farmer tractors at 1:32.

Functions: what can it do?

Functions differ per model and are listed in the product information. On Bruder lorries you can often tip the body, open a tailgate or lower a ramp. On the MAN TGS you swap the container with a hook arm. Check for each model whether it has lights and sound and whether that needs batteries.

Check the age on the packaging as well. Bruder usually gives 3 or 4 years and up for its toys; Siku prints the age per model on the box.

How to choose

• Plays with Bruder at 1:16: a Bruder lorry, with a tipper if your child likes loading and unloading or a low loader if there is a machine to move.
• Plays with Siku: a lorry in a set with tractors, such as the low loader with John Deere tractors. Check the scale: 1:87 does not match Siku Farmer at 1:32.
• Animals on the farm: Bruder's Scania livestock lorry.
• Under three: Bruder's Roadmax range.
