Sinterklaas and Christmas
In the Netherlands Sinterklaas is celebrated on the evening of 5 December, in Flanders on 6 December, and Christmas falls on 25 and 26 December. If you buy for both, split the budget: something small for Sinterklaas and a bigger present under the tree. Pick things from the same world, such as animals and a stable that go together.
The youngest: 1 to 3 years
For the youngest there are pedal tractors from Rolly Toys: Rolly gives 2.5 to 5 years for rollyKiddy and rollyKid. Small models with loose parts are not meant for this age; look for the warning for children under 36 months.
Pre-schoolers: 3 to 5 years
From 3 years the choice gets wide. Bruder tractors carry 3+ or 4+ in our data, Schleich Farm World mostly 3 years, and Rolly gives 3 to 8 years for rollyJunior and rollyFarmtrac. A large Bruder tractor at 1:16 is sturdy and can be used outdoors too.
Older children: 6 and up
Older children notice details and often grow their own farm. A trailer or implement for a tractor they already have is a good fit. Siku at 1:32 has many detailed models, and for outdoors Rolly gives 3 to 10 years for the rollyX-Trac.
For collectors: 14 and up
Britains gives 14+ for its Prestige collection, and Universal Hobbies calls its models a collector's item for ages 14 and up. Collectors groups these models. They are made for a display cabinet, not a sandpit. It helps to ask which scale the collection is in.
Under €20: a small surprise
Under €20 you currently find mostly single Schleich animals: cows, calves, goats, horses, dogs and cats. An animal that fits a stable the child already has is a safe choice.
€20 to €40: a small set
Between €20 and €40 there are Schleich play sets, such as a rabbit hutch, a goat shed or a starter set, and Bruder implements and trailers such as a rake, a bale wrapper or a tipper.
€40 to €75: the main present
Between €40 and €75 you find the large Bruder tractors and combines at 1:16 and the large Schleich stables. Mind the space: in our catalogue half of Bruder's 1:16 tractors are between 34 and 45 centimetres long.
From €75: giving together
From €75 there are mainly Rolly Toys pedal tractors and pricier collector models, from Wiking among others. Rolly gives an age and a body height for each pedal tractor; check both so the child does not outgrow it straight away.
Frequently asked questions
Which farm toys suit a 3-year-old?
Bruder tractors carry 3+ or 4+ in our data, Schleich Farm World mostly 3 years, and Rolly Toys gives 3 to 8 years for rollyJunior and rollyFarmtrac. Always follow the age on the box and watch for small parts.
What is a good gift under 20 euros?
That budget currently holds mostly single Schleich animals. An animal that matches the stable or animals the child already has gets played with right away. The budget follows the lowest current price, so a product can move between budgets.
Is a Britains or Universal Hobbies model a good gift for a child?
Not for a young child. Britains gives 14+ for the Prestige collection, and Universal Hobbies calls its models a collector's item for ages 14 and up. Bruder, Siku and Schleich are made for play.
When should I order for Sinterklaas or Christmas?
That depends on the shop. Check the delivery time and return terms with the offer, and order in good time rather than in the last week.
